In 2012, then Home Secretary Theresa May said she wanted to create a "really hostile environment” for people who can’t demonstrate their immigration status. These policies put border controls into our schools, hospitals, streets and communities.
People who can’t prove their status – like members of the Windrush Generation – have been denied healthcare, employment and housing. Some have even been detained and removed illegally.
These measures mean people of colour, people with accents and people with “foreign-sounding” names are asked to prove their immigration status, even if they've lived here their whole lives.
We took the Government to court and asked them to justify the reckless Right to Rent policy. They couldn’t – instead, the Court declared the scheme unlawful, because it causes unacceptable racial discrimination.
We know that this is simply the tip of the iceberg – and now, the Government wants to extend these policies to EU nationals through the Immigration and Social Security Co-Ordination Bill . Anyone from the EU who cannot prove their status risks being denied access to housing, healthcare, employment benefits and bank accounts, just like the Windrush Generation.
This Bill was an opportunity to create a fair, humane and evidence-based immigration system. Instead, the Government will have a blank cheque to change any immigration law, and will be able to extend the Hostile Environment to EU nationals in the UK.
Now is a critical moment to take action.
